Highlights of Cape Town day tour

This day tour takes you through the bustling city centre to Cape Town’s most magnificent landmark; Table Mountain. The aerial cableway windows are wrapped 360 degrees around the cable car and it rotates as it climbs steeply to the top of the mountain. On top of Table Mountain there are viewpoints and paved paths that make it pleasant for you to enjoy the wildlife and tranquility. Cape Town, the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Peninsula and green jagged mountain ranges, which make up the Table Mountain National Park, lie sweepingly beneath the mountain. The guide will also point out our next destination, Robben Island, while treating you to a glass of bubbly.

As we head to Cape Town’s bustling harbour, dining and shopping paradise; the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, we pass the colourful and culturally vibrant Malay Quarters called Bo-Kaap. Brightly coloured houses and local characters make up this historically significant part of the city. Feel free to take a post-card- perfect picture of this special place while our guide tells you about its history.

After lunch we depart for Robben Island by ferry. Look out for Cape fur seals, southern right whales and dolphins on the ferry ride to and from the island, as they are often spotted on this excursion. Robben Island prison is now a museum and UNESCO world heritage site. Our former president, Nelson Mandela, spent most of his 27-year jail sentence here as a political prisoner. The tour is given by a former political prisoner.

Peninsula & Cape Point day tour
Chacma baboon, Cape point, South Africa travel tours

On this tour we take the eastern peninsula coastal road from Cape Town to Cape Point passing culturally interesting towns with roots that go far back into South Africa’s history. Our guide will inform you of the stories behind these seaside towns as we stop at the old navy town, Simonstown, named after the first governor of the Cape.

Our next stop is Boulders Beach and the Penguin Colony. Boulder’s pretty, sheltered, sandy beach is not only famous for the small 'jackass' penguins that live here but it's also a delightful beach to sunbathe and swim. There is a boarded walk above the beach from where one can watch the penguins go about their daily routine or you may to go down to the beach for a closer encounter.

Cape Point, on the southernmost tip of the Peninsula, is also known as the 'Cape of Good Hope', 'the place where two oceans meet' and the 'Cape of Storms'. Cape Point is inside a National Park where local wildlife like baboons, ostriches, zebras and antelopes roam.

A steep walk to the lighthouse is well worth the effort for the beautiful coastal and mountain views or you can take the flying dutchman funicular. It is the only one of its kind in the world! There are also walking paths through the National Park which take you to the stunning beach and along the coast.

Just after leaving Cape Point there is the opportunity to buy ostrich leather and feather products as well as locally-made jewellery at an ostrich farm.

By this time it will be nearing the end of the day and the drive back to Cape Town is along the opposite (west) coast of the peninsula for some different scenery.

Cape Point, Peninsula, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa

This route passes through the coastal town Hout Bay and Cape Town's most famous, trendy, vibrant beach; Camps Bay. This palm-tree-lined, white, sandy beach is where the well-to-do and famous visitors to Cape Town hang out. Cocktail bars, nightclubs and restaurants overlook the beach and entertain late into the night. This is also a popular spot for 'sundowners' (a popular Captonian tradition: having drinks while watching the sun set) and it will be just about sundowner time when we arrive in Camps Bay. If you prefer for us to drop you off here instead of back at your accommodation then you can enjoy dinner with a sea view.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens & Township tour

Enjoy a scenic, guided drive to Hout bay along the coast and admire the magnificent modern architecture of the Camps Bay mansions towering on the mountainside. The Camps Bay strip of bustling and colourful restaurants are opposite the trendy, blue flag beach of Camps Bay. Take a deep breath of sea air and enjoy a taste of this wealthy lifestyle. We carry on along the beautiful mountainside of Table Mountain National Park and over the top to the other side to Hout Bay.

The striking contrast of wealth and poverty on opposite sides of the mountain is almost unbelievable but you will not be dissapointed as the smiling and friendly township folk welcome you. A safe and culturally-informative guided tour is the best way to get a feel for life in the townships:

  • Learn about the life, culture and the problems in a township
  • Meet friendly people
  • Visit a shebeen (local township pub / bar) and a township shop
  • Try traditional dishes and sorghum (traditional) beer
  • Visit a traditional healer, sangoma (doctor) and find out about the traditional beliefs
  • See the photo exhibition in the little Township Museum

Take the afternoon to relax and stroll through Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens; world-renowned for the beauty and diversity of the Cape flora it displays and for the magnificence of its setting against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Kirstenbosch grows only indigenous South African plants. The estate covers 528 hectares and supports a diverse fynbos flora and natural forest.

Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts
On Sundays during the summer months from December to March, musical sunset concerts are held in the eveings on the lawns. Bands range from rock to jazz to classical. Enjoy a picnic on the grassy slopes while listening to music as the sun goes down. Please contact us for picnic baskets and ticket bookings.
